The Cyclops
Dwarf elephants under a metre tall really lived on Sicily, Malta, Crete and Cyprus, and their skulls have one huge hole in the middle. Whether anyone in the ancient world looked at one and saw a Cyclops is another matter.

Evidence locker
- c. 700 BCCONFIRMED
Hesiod's three Cyclopes, smiths of Zeus's thunderbolt, had "one eye only… set in the midst of their fore-heads".
- HomerCONFIRMED
Homer never describes Polyphemus's eye or says where the Cyclopes live; one eye is implied by the blinding.
- 400s BCCONFIRMED
Euripides sets his Cyclops play under Etna; Thucydides calls the Cyclopes Sicily's earliest inhabitants and leaves the rest "to what the poets have said".
- 1300sREPORTED
Near Trapani, a seated giant with a lead-cored staff crumbled to dust; three huge teeth were hung in a church. Candidates: Eryx, Entellus, or Polyphemus.
Boccaccio gives no year; the often-quoted 1342 is from Fazello (1558).
- 1665REPORTED
Kircher worked out that 200 cubits meant 400 feet, visited the cave in 1637, put the giant at "scarcely thirty feet", and called giant stories "fables and old wives' ravings".
- Ice AgeCONFIRMED
The mainland ancestor, the straight-tusked elephant, averaged about 4 m at the shoulder and 13 tonnes.
- Ice AgeCONFIRMED
On Sicily and Malta, Palaeoloxodon falconeri stood up to 1 m; adult males averaged about 250 kg and newborns about 8 kg.
- 2021CONFIRMED
Ancient DNA from a Puntali Cave dwarf (about 2 m) shows its line shrank from roughly 3.7 m and 10 t, in somewhere between 1,300 and 352,000 years: fast for evolution.
- Ice AgeCONFIRMED
Crete had a dwarf mammoth about 1 m tall; Cyprus had dwarf elephants about 1 m tall until around 12,000 years ago.
- c. 4,000 years ago?DISPUTED
The Tilos dwarf elephant (about 1.85 m) may have survived until about 4,000–3,500 years ago.
That's the describers' own dating; later reviews treat it as tentative, and no human traces are found with the elephants.
- 1914CONFIRMED
Othenio Abel proposed that dwarf elephant skulls, with their central nasal opening, inspired the one-eyed Cyclops.
That he proposed it is confirmed (pp. 31–33). Whether it's true is the open question.
- 5th c. BCDISPUTED
Abel says Empedocles found such bones and thought them giants. No surviving text of Empedocles says so, and it isn't in Boccaccio or Kircher either.
First pointed out by Adrienne Mayor (The First Fossil Hunters, 2000). It still spread, e.g. Reese (1975).
- 1857–2025DISPUTED
The blinded-ogre tale was recorded across Europe and beyond (221 versions by 1904). Some argue it predates Homer; a 2025 study argues many versions may descend from him.
